Bird of paradise at Tirimbina?

Birds are one of the most diverse groups in Costa Rica, and the birds of Tirimbina are no exception: with almost three hundred species here, one can find from the most common to the rarest of species, some plain and some which by their colors, songs and sounds cannot be missed, no matter what a person’s level of interest in birds.

New rooms at Tirimbina Lodge

Once again we are pleased to share with you the good news of improvements in our organization.

At the beginning of February we opened six deluxe rooms (Coquette) at our Lodge.  The rooms, located near the Sarapiquí River and surrounded by beautiful gardens, have A/C, private bath, Wi-Fi, telephone, radio alarm clock, safe deposit box, and a small private terrace with chairs and a view of our gardens where it is possible to see various species of birds, including the elusive and beautiful black-crested Coquette hummingbird, which gives its name to the rooms.

Tirimbina founds International Programs

We are pleased to announce that this year will launch a new international center for the students of Ball State University (BSU, Muncie, Indiana) in Costa Rica, founded by Tirimbina. This 12-week program offers BSU students a familiarity with Latin American culture and the opportunity to learn a new language (Spanish), unlike other international centers such as those of Australia and London.

Meeting with an underground animal

We recently found around the volunteer house at the Reserve a small gopher Orthogeomys cherriei. These rodents are particularly difficult to observe because they have fosorial habits: they build a complex system of tunnels and are specially adapted to this lifestyle.

Christmas Bird Count

December 19, 2009, marked the ninth annual Christmas Bird Count for Tirimbina, the twenty-fourth Finca La Selva count for the Sarapiquí region, which includes the Reserve in its 24km diameter. A total of 136 species with 1,556 individuals was recorded during the count. It was a lower number of species compared with last year, because the climatic conditions that prevailed throughout the day impeded extensive sighting.

Welcome to the tropical rainforest ... our rain in 2009.

Every biological reserve is interested in knowing their biotic and abiotic components. Since 2008 Tirimbina Rainforest Center has been taking weather data with the purpose of providing this important information to researchers and tourists.
