LOCAL EDUCATION PROGRAM
The local education program was developed to provide eco-education to local children in order to stimulate awareness of their natural rainforest surroundings and their understanding of its importance. Since 2000, TRC has offered programs for children from the local schools of La Virgen, Puerto Viejo, Río Frío and Venecia to visit TRC for one day. During these visits, children learn about conservation, management of natural resources and the fragile ecosystem.
This is a free program for local children in which TRC provides transportation, lunch, educational materials and educators for the whole day. In 2005, more than 110 local schools participated in the environmental education programs at TRC, and school enrollment continues to climb each year.
Please see COMMUNITY OUTREACH, MAP OF LOCAL SCHOOLS.
The student scholarship program is another TRC-sponsored local education program. In 2006, TRC helped 16 low-income students from a local high school obtain full scholarships for high school tuition. TRC educators also supervise and assist local students with science-fair projects for community presentation, and offer night programs to local adults on conservation issues (ten communities are currently involved).
