PROGRAM FOR CONSERVATION OF BATS IN COSTA RICA (PCMCR)

The Program for the Conservation of Bats in Costa Rica strives to protect bat species and their natural habitats through environmental education and research.

This program was initiated in 2002 with the guidance of the Program of Conservation of Bats (Mexico) and Bat Conservation International. Due to the great diversity and fragility of bats in Sarapiquí, Tirimbina was chosen as one of the working areas of PCMCR.

Currently, TRC works with children from 20 schools in 4 priority areas in Costa Rica. Through a series of workshops, the children learn about the importance of bats in their lives and their environment. The workshops begin in fourth grade and continue until sixth grade. Each year, the children learn about a new group of bats.

There have been two generations of students who have graduated from the Bat Program and keep close contact with Tirimbina and the local bats.
