TRAILS

TRC has more than 9km (5½ mi.) of hiking trails spread throughout the Reserve, in addition to a 380m (¼ mi.) trail suitable for those with disabilities, which will allow anyone to reach the suspension bridge and further, if desired. This trail begins in the parking lot and ends at the entrance to the first suspension bridge.

The trails have been laid out so that the visitor can observe different habitats such as old cacao plantations, secondary forests, wetlands, river banks and the primary rainforest.
Visitors can also walk on Tirimbina Island, which offers 1100m (¾ mi.) of trails in the middle of the Sarapiqui River, as well as two areas where natural pools (swimming holes) have formed in the River.

Various trail lengths, surfaces, shapes and locations are offered to suit your preference for easy, intermediate, or adventurous hiking. Fees for trail tours vary.
Please see FEES for more information.

Bridges

One of the main attractions at TRC are the suspension bridges.  The first bridge is one of the longest in Costa Rica, stretching 264m (about 860 ft.) with an average maximum height of 22m (about 60 ft.) above the Sarapiqui River.  It passes over Tirimbina Island, offers a spiral staircase in the center to reach the island for hiking, and finally comes to other side of the river where the primary forest of the Reserve is located.
The second bridge is found inside the primary forest and is called the “Canopy Bridge” since it provide a tree-top perspective of the forest.  Hiking this bridge gives visitors the opportunity to view an entirely different habitat not visible from ground-level. This bridge is 110m (about 360 ft.) long and 35m (115 ft.) at its maximum height.
